The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) comes into effect on May 25, 2018 and affects how you capture, store and use customer data. This is mainly geared towards ecommerce sites doing business in Europe, but don’t dismiss things too quickly. There’s also new consent criteria which affects those of you who have website, blog, or newsletter subscribers or register users to your site. Overall, you are required to get explicit consent from all individuals that you deal with and most likely update your privacy policy. Don’t have a privacy policy? Well, now might be the time to draft and publish one.
I’m by no means a data protection expert and can only provide some of the most basic thoughts on GDPR. If your needs are larger than this, you may need to contact an IT expert. Either way, make sure you’re compliant by May 25!
